Focus on traditions rather than things

When I look back at my memories of Christmas I remember all the family traditions that we did year after year, not the gifts I received.  I remember:  Picking out our Christmas tree, decorating the house the day after Thanksgiving, my mom making tons of Christmas cookies that seemed to last for weeks, driving around town to see the Christmas lights, eating at the local same diner every Christmas Eve, waiting for the fire truck with Santa to come by our house, stopping by our family friend’s house to see their holiday lights galore, leaving cookies and milk out for Santa, opening one present on Christmas Eve, & eating my Grandmothers pie every Christmas morning.  These are the things that I looked forward to every year.  I don’t really remember any presents that I got as a kid.

The holidays should be a time to celebrate being with each other, not celebrating the latest techy gadget or toy.  Giving someone your time is way more valuable then things.  Take time to visit people you don’t see that often, volunteer as a family at the local shelter, play with your child (down on the floor), invite another family over for a family game night, teach someone something new, shovel someone’s snow, make someone cookies, buy the person behind you a cup of coffee, or invite someone over for dinner.
