Organizing Your Bedroom

Organizing a bedroom is crucial to your mental state!  Believe me, I know :-) You will feel more calm and relaxed if you're space is neat, clean & orderly.  You will feel the results immediately.  Some experts say that your sleep will improve too, which in turn helps you wake up with a better attitude.  Don't you want that?!


CLEAN YOUR BEDSIDE TABLE -- From the moment you reach over to snooze your alarm clock . . . you see CLUTTER.  There's nothing wrong with keeping a book or two on your bedside table, but do you really need 5 magazines, a container of tissues, 3 bottles of moisturizer, two glasses cases and that bottle of antacid there as well?!?!

Remove everything from your bedside table that is broken or that you haven't touched in at least 2 weeks.  Things that should belong in other areas of the house should be put back in their proper homes.  They don't need to take up real estate on your bedside table.

Think of creative ways to organize your space.  Do you have lots of books & magazines on your bedside table?  If so, add a book shelve like the one here.  How many books or magazines do you really need at your bedside?  If it's more than a book shelf might hold, maybe a linen lined basket might work.  I have one on the floor near my bed.  It works perfectly for me & isn’t an eye sore.  Toss out, donate or give away magazines & books you're done with.  Have a book swap at work or donate them to the town or school library.

Once you have decluttered your bedside table, you need to make sure it stays that way.  Therefore, create routines that suit you.  Make a point to clean it up every night, every other night, or every Sunday.  Whichever works for you.  Routines helps us stay organized & will keep your bedroom decluttered!

CHORES CHORES CHORES -- I'm sure we all agree that it makes your life easier when the family helps out!  Chores are tasks around the house that have to be done.  They keep the household running smoothly and also will prevent the dirt & laundry from piling up.  They can be as simple as making a bed.  Some parents struggle with letting their kids do chores.  I'm not going to get into the reasons why but the positive aspects of assigning household chores far outweigh the negative.  Let your children help!  Don't criticize them, just let them try it & complete it to their ability.  If you have to "redo" their chore to your liking (some of us have more OCD than others) then redo it, however don't let your children so you do it.


Having your kids do chores provides a number of benefits. Chores for kids can:

• Instill a sense of family by showing that everyone has a part in keeping the house running smoothly.
• Come with a sense of accomplishment.
• Help build self-esteem.
• Help lay the groundwork for a good work ethic.
• Earn praise for a job well-done.
• Show that there are rewards and penalties when something gets done or doesn't get done. This is true whether money is attached or not.

Make chores fun!  Make it a game for little ones.  Maybe even do them together.  But whatever you do, Simplify Your Life & have your children do chores!!!

Hey ladies . . . want to reduce a little stress today???

CLEAN OUT YOUR PURSE OR BAG --

Do you have receipts, coupons or lists everywhere?   Eventually these useless slips of paper seen to take over your bag.  If you have more receipts then US currency in your bag -- it's time to clean out your purse!  If it's difficult to locate anything, especially smaller items like keys, lip balm, cell phone or pens -- it's time to Just Do It!

I know, I know . . . you need everything that is actually in your purse.  Ok, so I'll go with that.  Are you still with me?  If so, dump everything out.  Yes you heard me, dump it!  Throw out old gum wrappers, grocery lists, to-do lists (which you're obviously not going to get to) and any other trash.  Take out anything that belongs to your children & put it away.  All kidding aside, in addition to just general cleaning (which I should add, needs to happen weekly), you should revisit which cards you have in your wallet or purse and think about whether you really need to be carrying them all the time.  Same goes for rewards cards, health insurance cards, social security cards & so on.  There isn't always a need to carry all of these items with you.  A little purse or bag is better.  Most people carry their whole world in the bags.  What if you lost is tomorrow?  Think about that & reevaluate what you carry around with you.

If you don't have a purse organizer insert -- go get one asap.  They are a life saver.  I can sit at a light, put my hand in my bag & without looking, find anything I need.  They are very inexpensive (way less expensive then most people's purses).  QVC sells a black & pink purse organizer for only $24.72 (including shipping).  That's a steal if you ask me.

National Pay Your Bills Week

The Third Week In February is time to set up a system for staying on top of your bills.  Getting a process down will help to avoid late fees and other unnecessary expenses related to disorganization.  Getting your bills organized saves you TIME & MONEY.

• Create a bill-paying area in your home -- stock with checks, deposit slips, letter opener, pens, stamps, envelopes, address labels, stapler & pens

•Pick certain days to pay the bills -- stick to these days.  It’s easier to choose the pay you get paid.

•Keep all bills/statements in one place when they arrive -- You can use a bill sorter/organizer to keep them ready.

•Automate as much as possible -- Set up automatic payments with as many vendors as possible.  This will cut down on possible late fees.

• Use your bank's online billpay -- features for vendors who don't have automated payment options (or if you just prefer having more control). You can set up recurring payments that you never have to worry about again, like the mortgage payment, the orthodontist, or anything.  This also saves on the cost of stamps, envelopes & checks.

•Simplify your number of bills -- Consolidate down to only 1-2 major credit cards instead of multiple department store and gasoline cards.

•Filing paid bills -- You can file balls and bank statements by months or by vendor.  An accordion file marked January-December will work perfect.

•Go paperless -- Most vendors prefer you go paperless.  If you go paperless then there’s not need to file & store away paper bills.  Signing into your online account & saving your statements as PDF files means less paper clutter.  (Make sure to backup your files on an external hard drive!)

CREATE TRADITIONS --  Kids love traditions, from holiday traditions to family traditions. As a kid, every Christmas Eve we would wait for Santa to ride by on the fire truck then go to the diner for dinner.  Every Easter we would color tons of eggs. You might also create some traditions at your house, whether that’s a family dinner time, Family Meetings or Family Day, or anything that brings you together. If you make it a regular thing, and give it special importance, it will be a tradition, and it will be something your kids remember into adulthood.

Happy Clean Out Your Computer Day!

Clean Out Your Computer Day is the second Monday of the month February.  It's a day to logically review and delete old files and programs.

For some of us, our computer is as cluttered as our filing cabinets.  Do you have a huge mass of random files in your hard drive? Files you may not even recognize.  Even people with the most organized offices often have a hard time keeping their computer files in order.

Most people add programs and files to our computers with reckless abandon.  Many of these files and programs are forgotten over time. Overtime they take up a lot of memory and cause confusion during retrieval and use of other files. Some may also slow down your computer.

 

Organize folders into logical categories.  Also, make sure to back up regularly by storing files on a disk or external hard drive.  Back up a minimum of twice a month, if not once every week.

 

I'm assuming a computer geek created this day as an opportunity for us to remember to cleanup and delete old and unused files.

 

So, get into the spirit of the day, and clean out the old computer!

FOCUS ON DOING, NOT ON SPENDING --Too often we send messages to our kids about how to live life, based on what we do -- going shopping, out to eat, or to the movies --  and so our kids learn that having fun means spending money, lots over it. We focus on material things, and therefore so do they. Instead, teach them (with words & actions) that what’s important is doing stuff, not buying stuff. Go for walks in the park, play outdoors, play board games, have a pillow fight, read, tell stories, play charades, cook and clean, go to the beach or lake, build stuff, wash the car, or volunteering. Spend quality time together, doing stuff that doesn’t cost money.

ALWAYS BRING SNACKS -- Kids always get hungry. So be ready -- if you’re going on the road, going to a doctors appt, going shopping or where ever, pack some snacks in baggies.  Make sure each kid can have their own baggy. Fill them with things that make good portable snacks like:  crackers, cheese, fruit, carrot sticks, PB&J sandwiches, graham crackers, peanuts, or raisins. An insulated lunch container with re-usable ice packs help keep things fresh. Also always bring plenty of water & drinks, as kids are always thirsty.

How to Organize Your Busy Schedule

In today’s busy world it’s hard for parents to find time to do everything.  The kids are heading in every direction, parents are stressed and family quality time takes a back seat.  Many of us feel that nothing ever gets done.

• MAKE A SCHEDULE - Make sure to post everyone’s schedule for the family to see.   When everyone is prepared for what is to come there is usually less stress around the schedule.  If you are planning on quality family time, block it off on the calendar and do not break it. 
• BE PREPARED TO BE FLEXIBLE – Have a pajama day from time to time.  You need to break from the chaos every now and then to get a breather.  The key in being flexible is to have a goal and do you best.  Don’t strive for perfection.
• GET SLEEP - Lack of sleep will ruin your day and your families. 
• UTILIZE THE FAMILY – You can’t expect to do everything yourself.  Even though you might feel it’s your duty or you’re just a control freak, make sure to train your children to get their selves ready in the morning.  Prepare them slowly to be more independent.  Have them make their own breakfast, help with laundry, brush their own teeth . . . whatever their age there is always something they can help you with.
• PARE DOWN YOUR SCHEDULE – It’s ok to say NO to a social engagement, play date, another kid’s birthday party, or an extra sport practice.  It’s ok to only sign your child up for one activity or sport per season.  Committing you & your child to too many activities will run everyone down & put stress on your family’s relationships.  If your child is always complaining about going to practice, dance class, etc. then maybe they really don’t want to be involved in that activity.  Maybe they just want to spend quality time with you!
• HOME SCHEDULE – Make sure to make this a priority for your children.  Have them do their homework at the same time every day.  Let them know that there is no playing etc. if they haven’t finished their homework.  Make sure they know exactly what their consequence will be.  Most of all, stick to that consequence!
• MAKE DINNER AN OPPORTUNITY – Invite your children to help plan and prepare dinner.  Make it fun.  Use the time eating together as an opportunity to ask questions about the day.  Some parents have their children do their homework while dinner is being prepared.  This is a great multitasking opportunity.
• CLEAN UP AND PACK THE NIGHT BEFORE – Make sure that all children clean up everything every night.  Once they get in this habit it will only take a few minutes every night.  Make it fun & help out a little yourself, and then maybe they won’t think of it too much as a chore.  This makes less for you to clean up!   It’s also very helpful to pack up backpacks, sign planner, lay out clothes, pack lunches, and set out important items by the door (like library books, projects to be handed in etc.)  This will make for a stress-free morning.  Trust me it works!
